Chillingham Voices Tour South Australia

Between 23 October and 7 November 2018, the Chillingham Voices Community Choir from the Tweed Valley in Northern NSW will tour the south-eastern region of South Australia.

This choir has previously performed interstate in Tasmania and S.E. Queensland, and also overseas two years ago in New Zealand.

During 2018 it has performed two concerts in the coastal village of Pottsville (the first with the Brisbane based choir Momentum), a Hallelujah concert in Murwillumbah, a rock concert in the park at Chillingham and a Sip, Sup, Song Cabaret in the Chillingham Hall. More details can be found on the Chillingham Voices Facebook page and website (www.chillinghamvoices.com).

Lead conductor Harlie Axford OAM says, “We have a varied repertoire that covers the genres of jazz, pop, gospel, classics and opera. There are nonsense songs like “Jabberwocky” to balance some of the more serious pieces such as “Lacrymosa”, “O Fortuna”, “Amarilli” the Randall Thompson “Halleluia”). Included in the repertoire is the popular Leonard Cohen “Hallelujah” and a madrigal from “The Mikado” that we staged last year. As an encore, we have a very moody Russian song “Tebye Poyem”.  Also we have two sub-groups (The Hot Chilli Chicks and Cool Chilli Dudes) to provide added variety to our performances.”

The choir members will be accompanied by three accomplished pianists (Lynne Turpie, Mary Wiseman and Neil Crellin), three conductors (Harlie Axford , Barbara Crellin and Dean Patterson) and guitarist Ed Dryhurst.

The choir will be carrying a letter of introduction from Tweed Mayor (Cr Katie Milne), some travel brochures and a DVD of Tweed Sounds and Images to encourage South Australian audiences to visit the Tweed Region.

Concerts will be held at the following times and venues:

Chillingham Voices raise the roof for flood appeal

On Sunday 30 April, Chillingham Voices Choir raised the roof of All Saints Anglican Church with its “Night and Day” Concert and in the process raised $2500 towards the Mayor’s Flood Appeal. Cr Chris Cherry represented the Mayor on this occasion and amongst the audience were flood victims from local villages who had received complimentary family tickets.  All Saints Anglican Church kindly provided the venue free of charge.

The Hot Chilli Chicks group performed a special arrangement of Michael Kennedy’s song “Lay Fallow” while the Cool Chilli Dudes performed a Russian song “Korobeiniki”. The choir was lucky to have the services of regular accompanist Lynne Turpie as well as two other accomplished pianists: Mary Wiseman and Mary Walters.

Choirmaster Harlie Axford was assisted in conducting duties by Heather Martin, Dean Patterson and Barbara Crellin. Choir members were pleased to see the full house of people, and were thrilled by the audience reception, given that preparation for the concert had been interrupted by the recent flood.

Highlights of the afternoon’s entertainment were solos by Maggie Morrison, Ed Dryhurst and Dean Patterson and musical accompaniments on piano, drums and recorder by Peter Smith, Barbara Crellin and Heather Martin.

Later in 2017, the Chillingham Voices will make a return visit to Stradbroke Island to sing with another local choir.

Hot Chilli Chicks singing “Lay Fallow”

Diurnal Range Meets Vocal Range

On Sunday 30 April at 2.30 pm, Chillingham Voices community choir will present a concert at All Saints Anglican Church in Byangum Road, Murwillumbah.

The concert will feature a diverse range of music, including new and familiar songs on the theme of “Day and Night”. In addition to songs by the full choir, there will also be items by the Hot Chilli Chicks (women’s group) and the Cool Chilli Dudes (men’s group).

This will be first local performance since the choir returned from a successful tour of the South Island of New Zealand in October 2016. Chillingham Voices sang with choirs in Queenstown and Dunedin as well as a number of smaller towns. In Christchurch they sang in the temporary “Cardboard Cathedral” and a new music venue called “The Piano”.

Regarding the repertoire for this April 30 concert, choirmaster Harlie Axford says, “We hope to provide a fascinating collection of music for all tastes, from madrigal to contemporary, with diverse styles from a range of ensembles and instrumental accompaniment.”

Admission: $12 adults, $10 concession, children under 12 free. The admission charge includes sherry and cake.

Proceeds of the concert will go to the Tweed Shire Council - Mayor Appeal Fund.
